A Snow Bunting, a rare Arctic bird, has been spotted on Malvern Hills in Worcestershire.
A Snow Bunting has been spotted on Malvern Hills by wildlife photographer Barry Atkinson from Kilcot. The bird, which breeds in the high Arctic and travels south to winter in the UK, is a rare sight so far inland. Snow Buntings are more commonly seen on the northeast coast or along the River Severn estuary.
The UK's resident population is limited to around 150 pairs in the Scottish Highlands. During autumn and winter, up to 15,000 Snow Buntings arrive from Arctic breeding grounds. These birds are known for their tolerance of humans.
Mr Atkinson said the Snow Bunting on North Hill appeared untroubled by onlookers. 'This made my attempt to photograph this individual all the easier, as it happily fed on the peak of the hill, quite oblivious to both myself and several walkers nearby,' he said.
