Northern to introduce 37 refurbished trains in north west

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 27 Oct, 15:02 · Archive

Northern will introduce 37 refurbished Class 350 trains across the north west from early 2028, replacing ageing Class 323s.

Northern is investing £25million in 37 refurbished Class 350 trains for the north west, with services beginning in early 2028. The trains will replace the ageing Class 323 fleet. They will feature air conditioning, at-seat power points for the first time on many routes, more carriages and luggage racks. They will also be fitted with variable rate sander technology, which can reduce stopping distances by up to 50 per cent in slippery conditions.

Tricia Williams, managing director at Northern, said the trains are 'much newer than the trains they are replacing, which are now reaching the end of their working lives' and will 'make a real difference to our customers, with air conditioning, more carriages, more space and a more pleasant environment'. She added they 'will also be more reliable, and built entirely around what our customers have been asking us for'.

Lord Peter Hendy, Rail Minister, said the refurbished trains will 'deliver immediate improvements, with more space, air conditioning and greater reliability'. He stated the investment comes 'shortly after our £1billion investment in a new fleet of British-built trains for the north'. Northern plans to roll out up to 450 brand new trains from around 2030 as part of wider investment in the region's rail network.
