Essex man jailed after £200k cannabis found in van

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 21 Oct, 10:02 · Archive

An Essex man was jailed for three years and four months after police discovered cannabis worth up to £200,000 in an overweight van.

Gjok Ndrevetaj, 33, of Southend, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison at Huntingdon Law Courts after pleading guilty to being concerned in the supply of cannabis.

Road Policing Unit officers spotted a white Mercedes Sprinter box van travelling southbound on the A1 at Norman Cross, Cambridgeshire, on March 2. The vehicle was pulled over at the nearby DVSA weighbridge in Sawtry, where Ndrevetaj, who was a passenger, told officers it was carrying commercial waste.

When police checked the back of the van, they discovered eight boxes containing cannabis with an estimated street value of up to £200,000. Officers also found plant pots, soil, clippings and boxes for heating equipment, described as the remnants of a cannabis factory.

Detective Constable Natalia Bochnacka said the discovery demonstrated 'how a routine stop for an overweight vehicle can uncover much more serious criminality' and that the cannabis alongside the factory remnants showed 'the scale of the operation'.
