The Royal Institution Roadshow, organised by the React Foundation, reached 6,500 primary and secondary pupils across West Cumbria in late September and early October. The interactive science shows were designed to ignite curiosity and enthusiasm for STEM subjects.
The events were held at 11 secondary schools, Lakes College, Cleator Moor Civic Hall and other community venues, led by Royal Institution Science in Schools presenter Usmaa Choudry. This year's theme, 'Fuel the Future', explored the science behind past, present and future fuels, along with sustainable power generation and storage.
Phil Redfern, managing director of React Engineering and chairman of the React Foundation, said the shows could play a vital part in sparking interest in science and technology. He noted that many young people in West Cumbria could not travel to London to experience such events. The React Foundation, established in 2004 by Cleator-based React Engineering, aims to encourage young people to pursue education and training in STEM fields.
The roadshow was supported by RWE, operator of the Robin Rigg offshore windfarm, and the Decommissioning and Nuclear Waste Partnership, which manages high-risk waste and demolition at Sellafield.
