NFL veteran Russell Wilson has interviewed for the NC State head coaching position, joining former Wolfpack star Philip Rivers as a candidate.

Russell Wilson, a 10-time NFL Pro Bowler, has interviewed for the NC State head coaching vacancy, according to ESPN. He joins former Wolfpack quarterback Philip Rivers as a top candidate for the role.

NC State fired head coach Dave Doeren on 24 October following a 31-28 loss to Stanford that left the team 3-4 overall and 1-3 in ACC play. The Wolfpack improved to .500 the following week with a win over California under interim coach Todd Goebbel. Doeren compiled a 98-74 record over 14 seasons at the school.

Wilson, 37, played three seasons at NC State before transferring to Wisconsin for his final college year. He was drafted by the Seahawks in 2012, won a Super Bowl and received the Walter Payton Man of the Year award. After retiring as a free agent in June, Wilson accepted a position as studio analyst on CBS Sports' NFL Today. Rivers, meanwhile, is in his sixth season as head coach at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama and has indicated he intends to finish the high school football season before considering other opportunities.
