San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said he has no expectation of Brandon Aiyuk returning to the team despite the receiver filing for NFL reinstatement.

Brandon Aiyuk filed for NFL reinstatement this week after hiring agent Drew Rosenhaus and is scheduled to report to the San Francisco 49ers' facility on Friday. The receiver has been absent from the team for just over two years since suffering a season-ending injury against the Chiefs in Week 7 of the 2024 season.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said he has 'no expectation' of Aiyuk returning to the team despite the reinstatement filing. 'I've kind of moved on with that mentally and doing kind of how I talked to you guys two months ago. Nothing's really changed for me,' Shanahan said when asked about a potential reunion. The New York Post reports that when asked if there is any possibility of a 49ers return, Shanahan said 'There's no absolutes in life,' suggesting he was not entirely closing the door.

Aiyuk's relationship with the franchise has deteriorated significantly. He was involved in an acrimonious contract standoff, received a reckless speeding citation and reportedly ghosted team medical staff during injury rehabilitation. On social media, he called general manager John Lynch and others 'weirdos' and 'creepy predators'. Aiyuk also has an outstanding warrant for his arrest in Santa Clara on a misdemeanor charge of exhibition of speed.

The 49ers' remaining options appear to be releasing Aiyuk or trading him. Tight end George Kittle declined to comment on Aiyuk's potential return, saying 'I plead the fifth' when asked whether he expected Aiyuk to make it into the facility.
