Seven in 10 Brits fear autumn budget will strain household finances
Summarised from 4 outlets · Updated 6 Nov, 10:08 · Archive
73 per cent of Britons are concerned the autumn budget could damage their household finances over the coming months.
A study of 2,000 adults conducted by Currys found 73 per cent of Britons are concerned about the impact the autumn budget could have on their finances over the coming months. A quarter of those surveyed said they were very concerned about the impact.
Uncertainty around household finances is already changing how people spend. Fifty-four per cent of respondents said they are becoming more cautious when it comes to major purchases. Six in 10 feel more price-conscious about what they buy than they did 12 months ago, with 30 per cent saying they are now much more conscious of prices.
Shopping habits reflect this caution. Sixty-one per cent compare prices between retailers when planning a major purchase. Almost half save up before buying and 45 per cent spend longer researching a product before committing to it.
Some people are deferring purchases altogether. Twenty-eight per cent are repairing what they already own for longer, while 22 per cent will opt for a cheaper alternative rather than buying their preferred item.
Ed Connolly from Currys said the research shows that 'uncertainty around household finances is making people think more carefully about when and where they spend, particularly on bigger purchases'. He said shoppers are 'becoming increasingly savvy about what represents a genuinely good deal' and that Currys is 'focused on helping customers make confident buying decisions and get great value on the technology and appliances they want or need'.
