Four starving dogs found at Nebraska lake, one euthanized

Summarised from 2 outlets · 3 reports · Updated 15 Oct, 21:32 · Archive

Four severely malnourished dogs were found at Conestoga Lake near Lincoln, Nebraska; one has been euthanised and three are recovering.

Four dogs were found emaciated, anemic and covered in urine at Conestoga Lake, southwest of Lincoln, Nebraska, and brought to the Capital Humane Society a week ago. One of the four has been euthanised because of its condition. The other three—Maisie, Milo and Winnie—are recovering and will soon be available for adoption.

The dogs were initially thought to be puppies based on their size. They are approximately two years old but all weighed under ten pounds when found, when they should have weighed closer to twenty to thirty pounds. Maisie required blood transfusions at a veterinary hospital. A successful transfusion was carried out over the weekend, and Maisie was approved for foster care on Wednesday. The other two dogs are eating well and being monitored by shelter staff.

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help to identify whoever left the dogs at the lake. Captain John Vik said investigators need additional information to determine exactly what happened. Treatment for the dogs is being paid for by the Zephyr's Fighting Chance Fund, a fund started in honour of another rescued dog from the previous year.
