Body camera footage shows a Gilbert police officer shooting 28-year-old Maximillian Bronson after he ran toward the officer with a knife.

Gilbert police have released body camera footage of a fatal shooting that took place on San Remo Street in September. The incident began around 4:30 a.m. on 15 September when Bronson's mother called 911 to report that her 28-year-old son, Maximillian Bronson, was armed with a knife outside her home. In the call, she told dispatchers: 'My son, Max Bronson, he's psychotic, he actually asked me to call you. He's 28 and he has a knife in his hand.' Bronson could be heard in the background of the call.

An officer arrived five minutes after the 911 call and located Bronson, who immediately began running toward the patrol vehicle. Body camera footage shows the officer reversing his patrol car for about 60 feet as Bronson continued toward him. The officer then stopped, exited the vehicle and ordered Bronson to stop. In the footage, Bronson can be heard shouting at the officer: 'Shoot me! You got to shoot me!' The officer repeatedly gave commands for Bronson to stop approaching.

After Bronson ignored multiple commands, the officer fired six rounds, striking him five times. Bronson collapsed and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Investigators recovered a 7-inch knife at the scene. An investigation into whether the shooting complied with department policy and state law remains ongoing.
