Six in 10 adults prefer cooking at home to nights out

A study of 2,000 adults found 60 per cent have swapped nights out in bars and clubs for home cooking.

A study of 2,000 adults commissioned by Hotpoint found 60 per cent have swapped nights out in bars and clubs for home cooking. Seventy-three per cent look forward to spending weekends at home, with 56 per cent doing so more than previously.

The preference for staying in is not solely driven by cost. Forty per cent of those opting to stay home simply feel happier there, whilst 32 per cent choose to spend weekends cooking because it feels more relaxing than cooking during the week.

For those spending longer in the kitchen at weekends, 63 per cent cite having more time to enjoy cooking, and 42 per cent appreciate not having to rush. Forty per cent feel they can attempt more complex or new recipes on Saturdays and Sundays, with 34 per cent saying they have more energy to devote to cooking.

The slower pace offers psychological benefits. Twenty-two per cent claim cooking helps them slow down and be more present, whilst 18 per cent say it allows them to switch off from screens and digital distractions.

Hotpoint partnered with Fuschia Sirois, professor of social and health psychology at Durham University, to explore how weekends have shifted towards resting and recharging at home. Prof. Sirois said: 'A night out can feel like the best way to unwind after a long week, but, psychologically, it often isn't. Studies on how we recover from work look at switching off, relaxing, learning something new and feeling in control of our time.'
