Middlesbrough pupils hold speed watch to slow drivers in school zone

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 29 Oct, 12:46 · Archive

Year 5 pupils from Linthorpe Community Primary School joined council officers and Cleveland Police for a community speed watch on Burlam Road in Middlesbrough.

Year 5 pupils from Linthorpe Community Primary School served as junior road safety officers during a community speed watch on Burlam Road in Middlesbrough. The pupils held signs urging drivers to slow down in the 20mph zone near the school. Several vehicles were recorded travelling at 30mph or higher.

The speed watch was part of a week of action organised by Middlesbrough Council's north neighbourhood team with support from Cleveland Police, community volunteers and residents. The campaign focused on tackling community issues in Linthorpe.

As well as the speed watch, the week included a drop-in session at Linthorpe Community Centre where council staff and police spoke to residents about crime and antisocial behaviour concerns. The campaign also held the ward's first community skip day at Westbourne Park with support from Thirteen Housing.

Deputy Mayor Philippa Storey, the ward councillor for Linthorpe, said: 'It has been brilliant to work alongside neighbourhood team staff during a week that has been welcomed by our residents in Linthorpe.' She added that the council had spoken to residents about parking and worked with the neighbourhood team and police about concerns over crime and antisocial behaviour.

Stockton and Darlington Times reports that Storey said she had 'the absolute privilege of working with our junior road safety officers from Linthorpe Community School who made posters for the speed watch to remind cars to reduce their speed near schools.'

Similar week-long campaigns are regularly held across Middlesbrough by neighbourhood teams in the north, east, west and south of the town.
