Army uses South Lakes author's book to train next generation of NCOs

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 19 Oct, 12:01 · Archive

The British Army is using nearly 100 copies of The Leadership Book by Kendal-based Neil Jurd to train its next generation of Non-Commissioned Officers at Sandhurst. Jurd's company, Leader-Connect, is also offering 50 free places on its online leadership courses to trainee NCOs as part of the initiative.

Jurd is a former Army officer who served from 1992 to 2009, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His service included deployments to Iraq, Yemen, Bosnia and Sierra Leone. He was injured by enemy mortar fire while leading his Gurkha squadron in Iraq and was commended for his leadership as a junior officer. After leaving the Army, he served as Colonel directing Initial Officer Training for the UK Army Cadet Force and previously as Commandant of the Lancashire Army Cadet Force. He later taught leadership at Sandhurst.

Jurd said: 'Developing leaders is the single most effective thing any organisation can do to improve performance. It is good for morale, creativity, retention and output. Leadership is leadership, in the military and in business it comes down to having clear objectives and motivating and allowing people to work towards those objectives.' He left his role as head of logistics at British Sugar in 2009 to launch Leader-Connect, which provides in-person and online leadership training linked to the book, published last year. The platform is already used by the University of Sheffield, Alertacall, Dallam School Trust and Abingdon Learning.
