A man has been arrested following a chase through suburban Melbourne in an allegedly stolen Holden Commodore. Police spotted the vehicle on Huntingdale Road in Chadstone at about 12.50am sporting false number plates. When officers attempted to intercept the car as it stopped on Robert Street, the driver accelerated away.

Officers deployed road spikes at the end of the street, but the vehicle continued, its tyres shredded. The Commodore led police on a chase through Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Monash, Mulgrave, Rowville and Wheelers Hill, reaching speeds of up to 200km/hr and veering onto the wrong side of the road. Helicopter footage showed sparks streaming behind the car as it travelled on three rims.

The vehicle came to a stop on Nullawi Street in Springvale. The driver jumped fences and was arrested by responding officers at a property on Charlestone Street. A backpack containing 'housebreaking implements' and an on-board diagnostics device was found nearby and seized. The 31-year-old man remains in custody and is due to be interviewed by investigators. No charges have been laid. The Commodore is believed to have been stolen in Prahran on October 5.
