Stacey Solomon says press intrusion should be illegal

Summarised from 3 outlets · Updated 3 Nov, 13:28 · Archive

Television presenter Stacey Solomon says media intrusion into her family's privacy is 'outrageous' and should be illegal.

Television presenter Stacey Solomon has said the extent to which the media invade the privacy of her and her family 'should be illegal', describing their behaviour as 'outrageous' and saying it 'makes you feel like you're being stalked'. Solomon is 37 and found fame on ITV's The X Factor in 2009. She now stars with her husband Joe Swash and their family in the fly-on-the-wall reality series Stacey And Joe, which documents their day-to-day life at their Pickle Cottage home in Essex alongside their children, ducks and two dogs. The series is returning to BBC One on November 10.

Solomon has recently spoken out on social media about being subject to what she describes as a 'pile-on' by the press, citing increasing intrusion into her privacy and heightened interest in her personal life. She says she sometimes feels 'harassed' and like she is being 'stalked' by the media.

In an interview with the Press Association, Solomon acknowledged the traditional understanding in celebrity culture. 'If me and Joe go out in the public and there happens to be somebody there and they get a picture of us, that's fair game,' she said. 'That's part and parcel of this industry. We do draw the line though.'

However, she drew a distinction between public appearances and intrusion at home and family events. 'There's no need to be followed around to family events. It should be illegal – these are kids. It's just weird,' she said. 'To me that's no longer of public interest.'

Solomon acknowledged that celebrities accept some scrutiny when they enter the industry. 'You pick your battles in those instances because you realise you've signed up to this – but to an extent,' she said.
