Rare banknotes donated to Edinburgh charity shop raise £85,000

A collection of rare banknotes donated to a British Heart Foundation shop in Edinburgh sold for more than £85,000 at auction.

Almost 160 rare banknotes from around the world were donated in albums to a British Heart Foundation charity shop at Straiton Retail Park in Edinburgh. Shop volunteers noticed the potential significance of the collection and passed it to specialist auction house Noonans, which waived its vendor commission. The auction raised £85,860 to support the charity's work researching heart and circulatory diseases.

The collection featured specimen and trial banknotes including a rare uncirculated note with a portrait of a young Queen Elizabeth II, issued by the board of commissioners of currency for Malaya and British Borneo. Other highlights included an extremely rare 1947 Iraqi 10 dinars colour trial and a 1961 specimen 100 riyal note from Saudi Arabia.

Shop manager David McCormack said: 'When the donation came into the shop, we all looked through the folders but didn't know much about the banknotes, so we sent them to our eBay team in Leeds to investigate. When we discovered their potential value, we were flabbergasted.' Allison Swaine-Hughes, chief commercial officer at the British Heart Foundation, said the charity was 'absolutely thrilled' and expressed gratitude to the donor and shop team.
