South Carolina is promoting employment initiatives to help military members transition to civilian careers.
South Carolina workforce officials are promoting employment programmes ahead of Veterans Day to help veterans and military spouses transition into civilian careers. The state is home to several major military installations, including Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot and Shaw Air Force Base. State leaders say helping service members find employment after leaving the military is critical to retaining talent and strengthening the state's workforce.
The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce and SC Works offer resources aimed at veterans, among them the STAYS programme, which stands for 'Stay to Apply Your Skills in South Carolina'. The initiative connects veterans and military spouses with employers, job training opportunities and interview opportunities after military service. William Floyd, executive director of the department, said the programme helps open doors for veterans entering the civilian workforce. 'We promise up to five interviews with STAYS employers, and we're opening the door to the interview,' Floyd said. 'It will be up to the interviewee and the employer to make that decision, but we're opening doors.'
Officials say veterans often leave the military with leadership experience, technical training and problem-solving skills that employers value. However, translating military experience into a civilian career can present challenges. Army veteran Carl Young said the transition was difficult. 'The transition was tough because my background really only focused on either becoming law enforcement or security,' Young said. 'So my background was a little bit harder to try and transition and find a career outside of it.' Young eventually connected with the STAYS programme, which helped him identify opportunities and attend hiring events.
