Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner blamed players for the team's failure to win the World Series, defending manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman.
Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner defended manager Aaron Boone and general manager Brian Cashman at a news conference, blaming the players for the team's failure to win the World Series. Steinbrenner said he thought Boone 'managed a good season, especially with the pitching staff' but that 'the players didn't live up to their end of the bargain in the playoffs'. The Yankees have gone 17 seasons without a World Series title, matching their longest drought since winning their first championship in 1923.
New York finished the regular season 93-68 and second in the AL East to Tampa Bay. After sweeping Boston in an AL Wild Card Series, the Yankees were swept 3-0 by Tampa Bay in the Division Series. Boone is in his ninth season as manager and has one season remaining on a contract extension agreed in February 2025. He has compiled a 790-565 regular-season record but a 27-30 postseason mark.
Boone said that not winning a championship would define how people viewed him and how the fanbase reacted. 'At the end of the day, we haven't won a championship with me at the helm,' he said. 'Ultimately that's what has to happen to satisfy certainly myself.'
