A severe storm tore through Mesa and surrounding Arizona areas, uprooting trees, damaging vehicles and knocking out power.

A violent overnight storm swept through Mesa and surrounding areas of the Phoenix region, causing widespread damage across multiple locations. The severe weather brought hail, wind and rain that uprooted trees, bent carports and damaged vehicles. Some parts of Chandler also experienced heavy rain and winds.

More than 2,400 APS customers and nearly 2,000 SRP customers lost power as of 4:30 p.m. on the day of the storm. At the Talise Apartments near Gilbert Road and University Drive, large trees were uprooted and a large branch snapped and fell onto a carport, bending it and damaging at least one vehicle parked underneath. Other residents woke to discover trees had collapsed onto their cars, shattering windshields. One resident said the winds were 'crazy' and stronger than anticipated.

Damage extended across the wider area. Near 19th and Peoria avenues, hail damaged apartment windows. Near 28th and Peoria avenues, a tree was knocked down into an apartment building. In west Phoenix near 31st Avenue and Bethany Home Road, severe weather knocked down tree branches.

Quail Run Park, located off Loop 202 and Greenfield Road, sustained significant damage, with several trees snapped and uprooted and stadium lights on the baseball field toppled. Crews were clearing debris from the park.
