Rock-shaped house approved for Ilkley Moor after planning appeal

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 18 Oct, 14:02 · Archive

Plans for a house designed to resemble rocks on Ilkley Moor have been approved following a planning appeal.

A house called Fomorian, designed to resemble rocks on Ilkley Moor, has been approved following a planning appeal. The building will be constructed in the garden of an existing property off Heber's Ghyll Drive in Ilkley on green belt land, with large irregular-shaped windows, a courtyard and a natural outdoor pool.

The building is designed to look similar to the Cow and Calf Rocks, a well-known landmark on the moor. It will be built to Passivhaus standards, an ultra-low energy standard intended to reduce energy use and emissions. Architect Matt Masserella-Gill was commissioned by landowner David Rasche to design the home.

The house takes its name from the Fomorians, a supernatural race of giants in Irish mythology. Its design also draws on the story of Rombald, a mythical giant said to have lived on Ilkley Moor. Masserella-Gill said the design was 'intrinsically linked to the spirit of its place' and drew 'cues from local folklore, the surrounding rocks; ancient carvings, standing stones and escarpments that are synonymous with the landscape'.

The application was first submitted to Bradford Council but the council did not make a decision within the required period, leading to the approval on non-determination grounds.
