Banned teen jailed after police pursuit days after suspended sentence

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 5 Nov, 19:51 · Archive

A 19-year-old banned driver has been sentenced to 22 months in custody for leading police on a high-speed pursuit just 11 days after receiving a suspended sentence for the same offence.

Alfie Ford, 19, from South Shields, has been detained for 22 months at Newcastle Crown Court after being found guilty of dangerous driving and driving while disqualified and without insurance.

On 19 June, Ford received a 15-month suspended sentence for a police pursuit on 27 March in which he reached 104mph in a 40mph zone whilst driving a black Vauxhall Corsa on Hedworth Lane in Jarrow. During that chase, he drove on the wrong side of the road, went through red lights and drove over a zebra crossing at 85mph with pedestrians nearby. The pursuit ended when he crashed into a police car and van. He was banned from driving for two years.

Just 11 days later, on 30 June, a police officer on a motorbike in South Shields spotted Ford at the wheel of a Mitsubishi with passengers. When the officer activated blue lights, Ford sped off, reaching 50mph in a 30mph zone and 77mph in a 40mph area before going the wrong way round a roundabout. He abandoned the car and fled on foot.

Judge Robert Spragg told Ford: 'You would have been told what would happen and just days later you were committing the same type of offence.' The court heard Ford was 'immature' and had missed an appointment with the probation service before the second chase.
