Teenager spared jail for £4,000 Boots thefts across North Wales

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 29 Oct, 16:01 · Archive

A 19-year-old admitted six thefts from Boots stores in North Wales and received a suspended sentence.

Livia Calin, 19, of Birmingham, admitted six thefts from Boots stores across North Wales and appeared at Mold Magistrates Court on Thursday. The goods stolen were worth more than £4,000. District Judge Gwyn Jones said the offences showed Calin had displayed traits of a 'professional' thief. She had travelled to various targeted stores across the region and taken high-value goods which could be sold on the alternative market, the judge said.

Celin had no previous criminal record, and her defence counsel, Gary Harvey, highlighted her age and suggested there was 'an element of peer pressure' involved. However, Judge Jones said the professional and targeted nature of the offending meant his starting point had to be immediate custody. He was persuaded to step back from sending her to jail. Instead, he imposed a 40-week detention sentence in a young offenders institution, suspended for 24 months, along with a probation requirement to be undertaken where she lives.

Calin was also banned from driving for 18 months and made subject to a five-year restraining order prohibiting her from entering any Boots store in England and Wales.
