The Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB of RAM costs $385 following an $80 price increase driven by RAM shortages.

The Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB of RAM now costs $385 following an $80 price increase, more than tripling its original $120 launch price. The 16GB versions of the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5 also increased by $40 and now cost between $375 and $415. Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Upton said the hikes were driven by a lack of 'alternative supply' for 16GB DRAM alongside shortages of other components.

Upton acknowledged the increases were unwelcome. 'Though these increases are unavoidable, we know they are unwelcome news for our customers,' he said. He suggested customers consider models with less memory or older Raspberry Pi versions as alternatives. The 2GB Raspberry Pi 5 had also received a price hike the previous month.

At $385, the 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 now approaches the cost of a desktop mini PC. Upton stated the company intends to reverse the price hikes once memory costs fall, describing the current memory landscape as 'difficult but ultimately temporary'.
