Brewers and Rays meet in World Series battle
Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 21 Oct, 20:44 · Archive
The Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays face each other in the World Series, with the series beginning in Wisconsin.
The Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays will contest the World Series, with the series starting in Wisconsin on Friday. Both teams have reached the Fall Classic despite operating with smaller payrolls than major-market rivals like the Yankees and Dodgers. Tampa Bay has the 28th-highest payroll whilst Milwaukee ranks 19th, yet both have advanced as the best teams in their respective leagues.
The matchup represents a contrast to recent World Series in which high-spending franchises dominated. The Brewers have appeared in only one other World Series, in 1982, whilst Tampa Bay previously reached the Fall Classic in 2008 and 2020 without winning. Fox News describes the Brewers as 'the best team in baseball' and notes they are favoured to win the series, with William Contreras listed at +650 for World Series MVP.
The series is shaping up as a technical battle between well-run organisations. The New York Post describes it as a 'matchup of technically sound and remarkably athletic players supported by brilliant baseball minds'. Tampa Bay will need to contend with an elite Brewers pitching staff, though the Rays face challenges against fastballs above 98 mph, having recorded the second-lowest on-base-plus-slugging percentage against such pitches during the regular season.
