York will host the Jorvik Viking Festival from 8 to 14 February 2027, featuring Viking and Norman re-enactments and family activities.
York will host the Jorvik Viking Festival from 8 to 14 February 2027. The festival will feature combat, living history, family activities and events inspired by the Viking-led rebellion against William the Conqueror in 1066. Mark Jackson of York Archaeology, which organises the festival, said: "Most people assume York's Viking story ends with the Norman Conquest in 1066. It didn't. Just three years later, a huge Danish fleet of 240 ships joined Northumbrian and Anglo-Saxon rebels to take York from the Normans."
Parliament Street will be transformed into a Viking encampment with tents, craftspeople, replica ships, food and drink. New for 2027 is an axe-throwing experience. Other highlights include the Viking Games and Battle at the Eye of York, re-enacting the 1069 invasion, and Kids' Barbaric Battles in Museum Gardens. The Berserker Bootcamp for children will also feature.
The 2026 festival attracted nearly 65,000 visitors. Organisers are preparing for an even larger turnout in 2027. The ever-popular Poo Week at DIG, inspired by fossilised remains, will return alongside the Viking Traders market and crafting sessions at Barley Hall.
