Tributes grow as man arrested over Melbourne woman's death

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 13 Oct, 05:32 · Archive

A 31-year-old man was arrested after a 21-year-old woman was found dead at a Carlton apartment block on Saturday.

Jayda Allen Bonner, 21, was found dead by emergency services at an apartment complex on Cardigan Street in Carlton, Melbourne, just before 2am on Saturday. A 60-year-old man was arrested shortly after the incident and released pending further enquiries. A second man, a 31-year-old from Carlton, voluntarily attended a police station where he was arrested on Tuesday. Police believe he was known to Ms Allen Bonner and is expected to be interviewed by Homicide Squad detectives.

Flowers, photos, candles and handwritten notes lined the entrance to the apartment block on Tuesday morning as loved ones and locals paid their respects. A fundraiser set up to aid funeral expenses and assist family to travel from Queensland to pay their respects raised more than $7,000 in 24 hours.

Anti-family violence campaigner Sherele Moody, who runs Australian Femicide Watch, called on government to ensure adequate transitional housing supply for at-risk women. 'We just don't have the housing stock, we don't have the space in refuges and women are often left to go to motels which are inappropriate, or having to live in their cars,' Ms Moody said. She said there have been 55 women killed due to gendered violence in Australia so far this year, which could rise to 80 by year's end.
