Canon David Low, a parish priest who served on the Isle of Wight for nearly 30 years, has died aged 86.
Canon David Low, who died on 19 August aged 86, was a parish priest who served in the diocese of Portsmouth, mainly on the Isle of Wight for nearly 30 years. He is remembered as deeply gracious, with a warm personality and great gift for friendship, and was respected for his abilities as a pastor, leader and mentor.
Low trained at Cuddesdon before beginning his ministry at St Cuthbert's, Copnor, in Portsmouth, then serving as a curate at St George's Cathedral, Cape Town. Born in 1938, he was taken to Burma as a six-week-old baby when his father, Duncan, was serving as a Major in the Indian Army. After his father was killed in early 1942, Low, his mother and sister escaped Burma on the last aircraft to leave for India, returning to the UK by sea. The family emigrated to South Africa in 1952, where Low studied English and social anthropology. He returned to the UK in 1961 for theological training and ordination.
Beyond his priesthood, Low worked as an ornithologist and was a trustee of Brading Roman Villa.
