President Donald Trump is visiting South Carolina on Wednesday to support Republican Senator Darline Graham against Democratic nominee Annie Andrews in a competitive Senate race. Although South Carolina is not typically a midterm battleground, Trump has been deeply invested in Graham, supporting her appointment to replace her late brother, Lindsey Graham, who died of an aortic tear in July, and backing her in a subsequent special primary.

Graham, the former director of the state agency for the blind, received bipartisan support when appointed to serve out her brother's term. She has faced some difficulties in her first campaign since taking the seat. Andrews, a paediatrician, has Democratic voters hopeful, though not necessarily optimistic, of breaking Republicans' traditional grip on the state.

More than $34 million has flowed into the race. Republicans have attacked Andrews as a 'radical liberal' and accused her of supporting surgeries for transgender minors; Andrews denies this. Trump is rallying supporters across the country this week, asking voters to 'pretend I'm on the ballot' to boost Republican midterm turnout. In a fundraising email, Andrews said Graham's call for Trump to campaign in South Carolina showed their campaign had strong momentum.
