Trump suggests NFL should have postponed Paris game

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 23 Oct, 23:32 · Archive

President Trump said Friday the NFL should have postponed its first regular-season game in France because of street protests against the cost of living.

President Trump told reporters Friday that the NFL "could have probably postponed" the upcoming game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints in Paris because of street protests in the city. "I think maybe it's looking like tomorrow is going to be a bad day in France, so you worry about it," he said. "France is really in trouble."

France is bracing for demonstrations Saturday against the high cost of living. Museums are closing and the government is deploying a larger security presence to prevent a repeat of the previous week's violent unrest. The U.S. State Department issued a security alert Thursday, warning Americans in Paris for Sunday's game to exercise caution and be aware of their surroundings.

The game on Sunday will be the first regular-season NFL game held in France, at Stade de France in Saint-Denis, north of the capital. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said this week that preparations were made in consultation with U.S. and French authorities, noting that street protests "are not unusual in France." The league did not immediately respond to Trump's remarks. Separately, Paris Saint-Germain's soccer game against Lyon has been moved from Sunday to Monday evening at the request of Paris police.
