Trump praises Republican candidates for their appearance at rally

President Trump has made physical appearance a campaign pitch for Republican candidates at rallies.

At a Saturday rally in Kentucky, President Trump praised House candidate Ed Gallrein, a former U.S. Navy SEAL, as a 'beautiful guy' suitable for 'central casting'. Trump also described Ohio Senator Jon Husted, who is running for reelection, as 'a perfect person, good-looking guy'.

Trump went further in his assessment of Husted at the Kentucky rally, saying 'I examined his ass. I never did that with a man before. I examined his ass. And then I looked at his shoulders. I looked at his feet. I looked at his hand. I looked at his jawline.' He made similar comments about Husted at an earlier Ohio rally, where he also referenced Husted's background as a college football player.

Trump's focus on candidates' physical appearance is consistent with his background owning the Miss Universe beauty pageant and his role on the reality television show 'The Apprentice'. He has previously used appearance as both a source of praise and ridicule. His emphasis on handsomeness comes during a midterm election campaign that has already included debate over which candidates are more masculine, and as the outcome will determine whether Republicans keep control of Congress.
