Two semi-detached homes were left uninhabitable after an unattended candle caused a fire that spread from a bedroom into the roof.
Two semi-detached homes on Essex Hall Road, Colchester have been left uninhabitable after a fire caused by an unattended candle. The fire brigade attended the scene at 4.46pm after residents heard the smoke alarm in the property.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said the fire started in a first-floor bedroom before spreading into the roof. The blaze then spread to an adjoining home. Fire crews extinguished the fire, which was later confirmed to have been caused by a candle.
Residents escaped without injury. Colchester station manager Paul Champ said having working smoke alarms on both floors meant the residents were alerted in time to get out safely.
Mr Champ warned people to ensure candles are always attended to prevent potentially fatal incidents. He said: 'As the evenings get darker and more people light candles at home, please remember to never leave a candle burning unattended. Even if you're only leaving the room for a moment, make sure you put it out before you go.'
