Two Latvian nationals have been arrested at RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire on suspicion of trespass and breaching national security.
Two Latvian nationals, aged 36 and 32, have been arrested at RAF Molesworth in Cambridgeshire following a security incident. Ministry of Defence Police carrying out security patrols discovered an abandoned vehicle near the base at around 10pm on Wednesday 7 October. Officers from Cambridgeshire Constabulary were called to carry out further searches of the site.
During these searches, a small breach in the perimeter fence was identified. Two men were found inside the base perimeter and arrested at around 2am on 8 October. Both are Latvian nationals who are currently resident in the UK.
The men were initially arrested on suspicion of trespass on a prohibited site and criminal damage. They were then further arrested on suspicion of an offence under section 4 of the National Security Act 2023, which concerns entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK. Both men remain in police custody.
Counter Terrorism Policing London is leading the investigation, working closely with the Ministry of Defence Police and Cambridgeshire Constabulary. An abandoned vehicle was recovered and taken for specialist searches, including deployment of explosive ordnance disposal officers as a precaution. Nothing of concern was found and cordons placed on nearby roads have been lifted.
Raf Molesworth is used extensively by the United States, hosting the US European Command and the Joint Intelligence Operations Centre Europe. Units of the US Air Force are also stationed at the base.
Commander Helen Flanagan, Head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said: 'We're very aware of the recent heightened interest and concern around military sites, but at this stage there is nothing to suggest this incident is connected to the events at RAF Fairford last week. Our investigation into this incident is at its very early stages.' She added that a significant part of the investigation involves determining the men's potential motivation for being at the site, but stated that police are 'keeping an open mind at this stage and enquiries are very much ongoing'.
