Dlinexsign Ltd was fined £20,000 after an automatic saw cut off part of a worker's finger at its Brackley premises.
An automatic saw cut off part of a 21-year-old worker's finger at Dlinexsign Ltd's premises on Buckingham Road Industrial Estate in Brackley, near the Oxfordshire border. Thomas Davies reached into the machine to retrieve a cut piece of material when his hand came into contact with the moving saw blade, causing him to lose part of his finger.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that Dlinexsign Ltd had failed to take effective measures to prevent access to the dangerous parts of the machinery. The machine was used to cut lengths of material, and workers were able to reach into it and access the dangerous moving parts while it was operating.
Dlinexsign Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 11(1) of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. At Milton Keynes Magistrates' Court on Friday, October 23, the company was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay £15,000 in compensation to Mr Davies, plus £9,064.34 in prosecution costs. HSE Inspector Dulanjala Kandana-Arachchige said the incident 'demonstrates the serious consequences that can result when access to dangerous parts of machinery is not effectively prevented'.
