Five people, including the gunman, died in an apparent murder-suicide at a home outside Douglas, Georgia on Friday.

Five people, including the gunman, died in an apparent murder-suicide at a rural home in Georgia on Friday. Investigators found the victims at the family's house on the outskirts of Douglas, a small city roughly 320km southeast of Atlanta. All those involved were adult family members of the shooter.

Police responded to an emergency call made by one of the victims shortly after 11pm. Officers found a woman alive at the scene, but she was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital, bringing the death toll to five. Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette said the woman, identified as the wife, had called earlier in the day complaining about the husband smoking in the house.

"Investigators believe this was an apparent murder-suicide involving immediate family members who reside in the home," Pruette said during a news conference on Saturday. The shooter died by suicide as part of the incident.
