Disqualified driver jailed after 104mph police chase in East Sussex

Summarised from 2 outlets · 3 reports · Updated 5 Nov, 18:21 · Archive

A disqualified driver has been jailed for 13 months after leading police on a 31-minute chase across East Sussex.

Alexander Williams, 31, of Bembrook Road, Hastings, was sentenced to 13 months in prison after leading police on a high-speed chase on 28 September. Officers on patrol spotted a black Range Rover without insurance or tax in The Ridge, Hastings, and signalled for it to stop. Williams sped off and was pursued through Fairlight, Winchelsea, Rye and Iden over 31 minutes.

During the chase, Williams reached speeds of 104mph in a 60mph zone and 92mph in a 30mph area, making dangerous overtakes in wet conditions. He continued driving after police deployed a stinger device to deflate the vehicle's tyres. He eventually left the road, crashing into a ditch after driving through an apple orchard, then fled on foot into a wooded area before being found and arrested with the help of Police Dog Kudos.

Sergeant Kieran McDonald from the Roads Policing Unit said Williams' driving 'fell far below that of a careful and competent driver, and simply was extremely dangerous'. He added that Williams 'placed the safety and the lives of the public, the police and himself at risk' and that 'it's extremely fortunate he was not involved in a serious collision'. Williams told officers he fled because he was on probation and had previously been caught driving while disqualified. He is partially blind.
