A walker in their 60s was airlifted from Heron Pike in the Lake District after falling seriously ill on October 11.

A walker in their 60s was airlifted from Heron Pike in the Lake District on October 11 after falling seriously ill during their ascent. Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team was called out at 1.55pm to assist the walker, who had been managing symptoms of a cold virus before developing sudden dizziness, severe nausea, and repeated vomiting. The casualty's condition left them unable to continue up the fell or descend safely.

A spokesman for Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team explained the decision to call in air support: 'Given the steep terrain, the casualty's condition, and the distinct medical risk of managing an actively vomiting patient immobilised in a mountain rescue stretcher during a protracted descent, the decision was taken to request air support.' HM Coastguard helicopter Rescue 899, deployed from Prestwick, was tasked to assist with an aerial evacuation.

The helicopter landed near the casualty and flew them to the Patterdale MRT base. At the base, the walker was reassessed by a team doctor before being discharged into the care of their companions for onward transport to hospital. The rescue operation involved 12 mountain rescue volunteers and lasted three and a half hours. The mountain rescue team thanked HM Coastguard for their support during the incident.
