Lake District webcam goes live with panoramic Coniston valley views

A new webcam atop the Heritage Waterwheel in Coppermines Valley near Coniston streams live views down the valley towards Coniston Village.

A new mountain webcam installed by Coppermines Lakes Cottages is now streaming live panoramic views of the Lake District's Coppermines Valley near Coniston to viewers worldwide. Positioned atop the Heritage Waterwheel, the camera looks down the valley towards Coniston Village, with Coniston Water visible in the distance.

The Heritage Waterwheel was installed in 2021 and reflects the wheel which would have been present when the mines were in use. The Coppermines Mountain Cottages themselves were restored from former mining buildings in the 1980s and are now available for self-catering breaks.

The project was made possible thanks to a recent fibre broadband installation by Viberoptix, part of the Fibrus Group. Viberoptix was named Infrastructure Builder of the Year for connecting more than 146,000 homes and businesses across Cumbria since expanding from Northern Ireland in 2021.

According to a spokesperson for Coppermines Lakes Cottages, the webcam 'shows the current conditions in the mountains, useful for hikers, and also gives users an up-to-date view what's happening in the valley'. The spokesperson added that viewers can 'spot roaming Herdwick sheep and watch out of the first snow of winter'.

Viberoptix carried out cabling work earlier this year at the Coniston Copper Mines site, a conservation area and Site of Special Scientific Interest. To minimise environmental impact, engineers used a track trencher to cut a narrow trench for the fibre optic cables.
