An interactive art trail featuring three new public art installations has launched in York city centre.
An interactive art trail featuring three new public art installations has opened in York city centre from 4 November, running until 8 November. The trail is part of Aesthetica Film Festival's Radical Listening immersive media arts trail and was created in partnership with Audible. It aims to explore what happens when media art is encountered rather than actively sought out, and to invite people to pause and rediscover the power of attention in everyday life.
The first installation, Henge: Echoes Through Time (2026), is located in King's Square. It consists of several wire boxes with lights inside and takes audiences on a 'cinematic journey through time', evoking different periods and experiences of York, from the Minster's hawks and bells to the iron works and fires of earlier eras. The composition will evolve over the week, 'slowly revealing itself through audience participation'.
A second piece, The Sound of Coming Back to Life (2026), is displayed in Exhibition Square. Created by Squidsoup and inspired by artist Anthony Rowe's experience of cardiac arrest, the installation captures his recollection of returning to consciousness through a sound recording made using an electric upright bass. It reflects the physical and emotional responses Rowe experienced, including confusion, anger, fear and vulnerability.
