Whitehaven has won the Best Coastal Town category at the 40th Cumbria in Bloom Awards. The award ceremony took place at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal on October 5.

Whitehaven Mayor Raymond Gill said the town was delighted with the success. He described it as a just reward for the hard work of council staff and contractors, and said the town was proud of its investment of time and money in the entry.

Organisers praised all participants for their achievements during what they described as a 'challenging' growing season. Keith McIntosh, chair of Cumbria in Bloom, said prolonged dry weather made growing and maintaining displays much more difficult, but that what judges saw as they travelled around the county was inspiring. He said the competition had always been about more than flowers: it was about people taking pride in where they live, bringing communities together and improving the environment.

Entries for next year's competition open in February 2027.
