Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris says the club will take legal action against Jamie Carragher over remarks made on a podcast.

Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris announced the club would pursue legal action against Jamie Carragher following remarks made on the Stick To Football podcast. Carragher had suggested manager Unai Emery should consider taking the Manchester United job if Michael Carrick were to be sacked, prompting criticism from Villa fans. When challenged, Carragher told Villa supporters to 'shut the f*** up'.

Sawiris defended his decision to pursue legal action by telling The Athletic that the club needed to protect fans who had been offended by Carragher's language. 'As custodians of this great club, we cannot stand still while the F word is directed at Villa fans in any media outlet,' he said. 'Having a critical opinion is different from using foul language against fans and showing up as if nothing has happened the following week.'

Carragher apologised following the threat of legal proceedings. The decision divided Aston Villa supporters, with some questioning whether legal action represented an appropriate response, whilst others applauded the club for 'standing up' for the fanbase.
