Woman collapses after man impersonates police at Oxford Burger King

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 22 Oct, 13:32 · Archive

A woman in her 60s collapsed in distress after a man falsely claiming to be a police officer banged on a disabled toilet door at an Oxford Burger King.

A woman in her 60s collapsed in distress at a Burger King in Oxford Retail Park after a man pretending to be a Thames Valley Police officer harassed her whilst she was using a disabled toilet. The incident occurred on Wednesday 7 October at about 7.15pm at the restaurant on Ambassador Avenue.

The man banged aggressively on the toilet door and falsely claimed to be a police officer. He told the woman she needed to go to a police station in connection with a serious crime and lied that her husband had been arrested. The victim believed what he said and became extremely distressed, fearing for her safety, and hid inside the toilet.

When she opened the door, she subsequently collapsed due to her distress. Thames Valley Police have launched an investigation into the public order incident and released a CCTV image of a man they want to speak to. PC Chris Longworth said the incident caused significant distress to the victim, who genuinely believed she was dealing with a police officer and feared she was about to be arrested. Police have carried out enquiries to identify the man but have so far been unsuccessful. Officers are appealing directly to the man in the image, or to anyone who recognises him, to contact Thames Valley Police, as they believe he may have vital information relating to the investigation.
