Serial abuser jailed after controlling girlfriend's life

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 17 Oct, 06:08 · Archive

Jamie Suttle, 34, has been jailed for domestic abuse including strangulation and assaulting his pregnant girlfriend.

Jamie Suttle, 34, a serial woman beater, has been jailed after subjecting his girlfriend to a campaign of control and abuse. The Recorder of York, Judge Sean Morris, told the court he was giving a 'very, very big warning' about Suttle to all women.

Prosecution barrister Emma Handley outlined how Suttle controlled every aspect of his victim's life. He dictated who she could train with at work, who she could talk to, and what she could wear, including forcing her to wear warmer clothes during summer's high temperatures. He tracked her movements and made her so afraid she suffered constant panic attacks and could not sleep.

The abuse included severe violence. Suttle threw his girlfriend over a sofa whilst strangling her so she could not breathe. On another occasion he punched her so hard in the face that the force bent her backwards and gave her a black eye, afterwards telling her: 'At least you now know you can take a punch.' He removed her contraceptive patch without her consent and, after she became pregnant, punched her in the stomach. Friends, work colleagues and neighbours all noticed how she had changed. Suttle has previous convictions for domestic abuse against other women and has breached court orders banning him from contacting previous victims.
