Western Pennsylvania high school football playoffs have begun, with Avonworth taking the top spot in small school rankings following their conference title victory.

The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) football playoffs are now underway, marking the end of the regular season 'stretch run'. The playoff period has brought significant movement in the small school power rankings, with a new team claiming the top position.

Avonworth's victory over Propel Braddock Hills in the Class 3A Three Rivers Conference title game propelled the Antelopes to the top of the small school rankings. This came following Seton LaSalle's loss to Bishop Canevin in a Class 2A Century Conference showdown. The movement reshuffled several ranked teams, with four head-to-head contests between ranked small school teams creating substantial changes.

The reshuffling saw Aliquippa drop from the Trib 10 power rankings entirely, with their position claimed by Class 2A Allegheny Conference champion Apollo-Ridge. In the big school rankings, Central Catholic, Pine-Richland, Penn-Trafford and Upper St. Clair all maintained their positions at the top of the standings.

With many teams taking byes in Week 11, seven of the twenty power-ranked teams across both classifications are not competing this weekend. Several ranked teams are scheduled to play, including South Fayette hosting Kiski Area, Montour hosting Shaler, Thomas Jefferson hosting Moon, and McKeesport hosting Blackhawk.

PennLive reports that ten standout recruits across Western Pennsylvania are positioned to lead their teams deep into the playoffs, with several chasing their first district title to conclude their high school careers.
