Kroger has broken ground on a 99,000 square-foot Marketplace in Huntington, West Virginia, expected to open in late 2027.

Kroger held a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday for its new Marketplace store in Huntington, with local officials and company representatives attending the event at the construction site on Fifth Avenue and 24th Street.

The 99,000 square-foot store will include an expanded grocery selection, pharmacy, fuel station and enhanced pickup area. It is expected to open in late 2027 and will be Kroger's second Marketplace location in West Virginia, following one that opened in South Charleston. The current Kroger location on Fifth Avenue will close when the new store opens.

Huntington Mayor Patrick Farrell said it was 'a great day for Huntington, it's a great day for Kroger'. James Menees, head of Public Affairs for Kroger's Mid-Atlantic region, told reporters: 'I think we're meeting the community's needs. That's why we're building a new store. We heard from our community that they were ready and wanted a new store, so that's what we're bringing to them.'

The proximity to Marshall University's campus has drawn particular enthusiasm from students and nearby residents. Huntington Municipal Development Authority Executive Director Cathy Burns noted the site was previously a parking lot and warehousing space, and said she was pleased to see 'a higher and more dense development happening'.
