York tops Yorkshire region for gym and pool access

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 23 Oct, 06:08 · Archive

York has more fitness facilities per resident than anywhere else in Yorkshire and the Humber.

York has secured the top position in Yorkshire and the Humber for fitness facility access, according to a new national study comparing gyms, swimming pools and outdoor activity options across England's 294 local authorities. The city has 43 fitness facilities serving 2.1 per 10,000 residents, significantly above the national average of 1.6. York also leads the region for public swimming pools per head, with 16 pools serving its population.

The study evaluated local authorities across 15 measures, including access to gyms, leisure centres, swimming pools, parkruns, parks, cycle routes and air quality. York secured an overall score of 56.7 out of 100, placing it 57th in England. North Yorkshire finished first in the region and was the only local area to make the national top 50, ranking 40th nationally.

A spokesperson for AdultWork, the organisation behind the study, said that where people live significantly affects how easy it is to fit exercise into daily life. 'Regular exercise does a lot for how people feel about themselves, and a gym class or sports club is one of the best ways to meet new people,' the spokesperson said. Calderdale ranked third in the region with 52.3, Sheffield fourth with 51.2, and North Lincolnshire fifth with 50.3.
