A refurbished basketball court named 'The Lion Cage' opens in Hull Road Park in York on Saturday.

A refurbished basketball court named 'The Lion Cage' officially opens in Hull Road Park in Millfield Avenue, York, on Saturday 17 October. The court was refurbished free of charge by London-based basketball and streetwear brand Half Decent Day (HDD) and court surface specialists SC Sports, in collaboration with City of York Council. The refurbishment was part of their mission to create inviting public spaces that reflect local identity and encourage community use.

Sam Sure from HDD said the collaboration was driven in part by a need to improve outdoor facilities, which he said can hold back the growth of the sport. The court features a design inspired by the park's Victorian lion head sculpture, connecting the space to its history. City of York Council funded upgrades to the basketball hoops and backboards.

Ward councillor Anna Baxter, who represents Hull Road, said the new basketball court artwork looks fantastic and is a brilliant addition to the park. She praised HDD and SC Sports for their generosity, creativity and hard work in making it happen at no cost to the council.
