91-year-old railway enthusiast returns to steam trains after recovery

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 18 Oct, 14:31 · Archive

Peter Brown, 91, travelled on the Poppy Line in Norfolk after regaining mobility through rehabilitation at a Cambridgeshire care home.

Peter Brown, a 91-year-old train enthusiast with 40 years of railway experience, has returned to travelling on steam trains after recovering from a serious fall. He dislocated both shoulders in an accident at his Cambridge home earlier this year and spent five months in hospital before moving to Bramley Court Care Home in Histon in June.

At the care home, Brown began a rehabilitation programme that included weekly physiotherapy, exercise classes and daily walking practice. Carol Morgan, head of quality at Bramley Court, said: 'Peter was using a wheelchair when he came to us, but just three months later, he was walking with a frame. He has also regained the use of his arms and he has his independence back.'

Brown recently travelled from Sheringham to Holt on the Poppy Line in Norfolk alongside his two daughters, a journey that brought back fond memories of his career. He began working on the railways in 1951 as a fireman on steam trains before moving to diesel locomotives and becoming a driver in the 1980s. Brown said of his recovery: 'I couldn't move my shoulders or hold a cup, and I couldn't get out of bed. I didn't think I'd get to where I am now including being able to walk down the train platform.'
