A guided walk in Haworth will explore folklore and hauntings on the moors that inspired the Brontë sisters.
A guided walk in Haworth on 1 November from 11am to 1pm will explore the folklore, hauntings and industrial history of the moors that inspired the Brontë sisters. The event, titled 'What Haunts the Moor?', is led by poet Kristina Diprose, who served as artist-in-residence on Penistone Hill from August to October. Participants will walk from Haworth to the Penistone Hill trig point.
The walk will explore stories of bog bodies, ghostly black dogs and forgotten industries drawn from the Brontë Parsonage Research Library archives and from the landscape itself. It will also examine the moor's literary legacy and references to supernatural black dogs from Yorkshire folklore, known as the barghest and gytrash.
Diprose described the walk as 'a ghost walk with a twist'. The event is inspired by her audio trail, How to Talk to the Moor, created during her residency. She said it 'offers a chance to share some of the stories and facts I've been inspired by in my writing, and to get to know Brontë country as you've perhaps never seen it before'.
