Dance-theatre Magic Flute comes to Hexham in November

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 14 Oct, 06:05 · Archive

A dance-theatre adaptation of Mozart's The Magic Flute is coming to Queen's Hall Hexham on 8 November.

A dance-theatre adaptation of Mozart's The Magic Flute is visiting Queen's Hall Hexham on 8 November as part of a UK tour. Created by Luca Silvestrini's Protein company, the production is designed for children aged seven and above and blends dance, song, storytelling and vivid visuals. Audiences will follow bird catcher Papageno and Prince Tamino as they journey to rescue Princess Pamina, discovering a story of love and friendship overcoming darkness as they unravel mysteries surrounding the Queen of the Night and Sarastro.

The production features a rearranged version of the original Mozart score with additional new music by Frank Moon, set and costume designs by Dick Bird, and lighting by Rachel Shipp. A cast of four performers—dancers Nathan Bartman, Jacob Lang and Mette Nilsen, and soprano Donna Lennard—take on multiple roles. Ms Lennard has previously appeared in Protein's productions May Contain Food and The Little Prince.

All performances will include integrated creative captioning, and select relaxed shows will offer BSL interpretation, touch tours and audio description. Luca Silvestrini, artistic director of Protein, said the production marks the company's first new stage production since The Little Prince premiered in 2018. Protein has been a leading name in British dance theatre for more than 25 years and won the Critics' Circle National Dance Award for Best Independent Dance Company in 2011, with nominations again in 2016 and 2025.
