West Coast Eagles star Ella Roberts suffers ACL rupture

West Coast Eagles midfielder Ella Roberts has ruptured her ACL and will require surgery, sidelining her for up to 12 months.

West Coast Eagles midfielder Ella Roberts ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament during the first quarter of Saturday's 55-point loss to Hawthorn, the Eagles' final game of the season. Roberts, 21, went down in pain less than four minutes into the match while attempting to change direction and make a tackle. She was assisted from the field by trainers.

Scans confirmed the ACL rupture on Monday, and Roberts will undergo knee reconstruction surgery this week. Given the typical 12-month recovery from such surgery, she faces an uphill battle to feature in the 2027 AFLW season. Michelle Cowan, West Coast's head of women's football, said the club's priority was to arrange surgery as soon as possible and provide Roberts with the best care during her rehabilitation.

Roberts, a two-time All-Australian and winner of the Eagles' best and fairest award in 2024 and 2025, has been one of the club's standout players. This season she averaged 21.7 disposals and 5.8 tackles and had kicked 20 goals in 55 games since her 2022 debut. Roberts posted on social media thanking fans for their support and expressing determination to return a better player.
