Sara Davies' Crafter's Companion enters liquidation, all staff made redundant

Summarised from 2 outlets · Updated 23 Oct, 16:03 · Archive

All 58 staff at Sara Davies' Crafter's Companion have been made redundant after the company entered liquidation.

All staff at Crafter's Companion, the crafts business founded by Dragons' Den star Sara Davies, have been made redundant after the company entered liquidation. The 42 employees at the headquarters in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, and 16 workers at the store in Evesham, near Worcester, were told of the closure during a face-to-face meeting with Davies on Monday 19 October.

The company went into liquidation following merger talks with Gemporia, a jewellery and craft retailer and one of Crafter's Companion's biggest UK customers. Gemporia's board determined that the businesses could operate under a single trading entity, making the existing Crafter's Companion company redundant.

Davies, who founded the business while studying at university in 2005, told The Northern Echo that she had worked to make Crafter's Companion 'a stable entity' since returning a year ago. She said Gemporia's board reached their decision 'very, very quickly' last week. Davies said she chose to tell staff personally rather than let them learn about the closure elsewhere. The closure follows months of upheaval including previous job losses and a warehouse closure.
